The Subject- Sleepy
Hollow of Gettysburg, Pa, Walking Ghost Tours
Be Advised- This tour was originally at the Farnsworth House, but
it has moved to The Great T Shirt Co. located at 65 Steinwehr Ave. Another group
has taken over the Farnsworth location...so make sure you hit the right one!
Subject Category- Walking Tour run by Cindy Shultz
Description- This walking tour takes you through the south end
of the town of Gettysburg, just north of where the more popular battlefields are
located. The tours last about an hour and the distance is 3 to 5 blocks.
The Good- Our tour guide, Sarah, was dressed in period attire and
spoke with a strong, loud voice which allowed everyone in the large group to hear
every word of the stories. Nine stories are included in the tour, which all began
with some of the rich history that belongs to the town of Gettysburg.
I must say that I have nothing negative to say about this ghost walk. The guide,
although a newcomer, showed confidence that matched her strong voice. Even with
the loud noises of trucks, buses and motorcycles moving on the main street, the
guide's voice reached each one in the crowd. Little Magee, the guide's helper, was
just as good leading the crowd of people from site to site while Sarah blocked traffic
so the crowd could safely cross the streets. Even when I lagged behind to take photos,
Sarah waited to be sure I got across safely. This shows a real concern for the people
on the tour, and that's extremely important to me.
The Stories themselves were good, bringing together some history, personal accounts
and local legend. What really impressed me about the stories, which I found out
during an interview with the owner, is that the guides go out and research the stories
themselves. Instead of taking them out of some book, they get the eyewitness accounts
from those who were the eyewitnesses!
The Bad- Not much at all here. Just like any walking tour, if you
have trouble staying on your feet for more then an hour, you might want to rest
before going along.
Advice- Do it! If you go to Gettysburg and miss this tour...I'll
find you and give you "a talking to"! On a serious note, this is something
you should take. There are some stories that even I didn't know about...and that's
hard to come by!
